- New tile found 1

--------------------------

Last night the tile beneath ( 30-22 ) is sold for the extremely high value of  EURO 258. It's a pity that I ended as second bidder. So the dutch collectors are missing this - until this moment - unknown tile. It represents the coat of arms of Volendam, a small village for fisherman at the Zuiderzee ( Southlake ) in the past.
Beneath I've tried to explain the meaning of this coat of arms :

Until the middle of the seventeenth century Volendam, now well known as a fishing village, was a mainly agricultural community. Its coat of arms, since 1659 on display in the Dutch Reformed Church there, strikingly shows the change from a pure agricultural society to a thriving fishing community. The scene showing a foal with a flounder at its front leg, is part of a legend about young farm girl going about her daily chores, gathering hay near the seashore, just outside the protecting dikes.
One day, a foal arose from the sea and started walking on its surface as if it were firm ground, asking the girl to come and join him. Lijsje, as the girl was called, was both enamored by the lovely creature and very curious about how a foal could walk on water. Apparently she joined the foal, as nothing has ever been heard of her since! The villagers, alerted by her disappearance, combed the seashore and went out in boats to look for her, but all they found was an abundance of fish.
On hindsight, the meaning of the legend is quite clear. The foal stood as the symbol of agricultural activities, whilst the flounder at the foal’s leg represents the abundance of fish available in the (then) Zuiderzee. The legend ends with the reaction by the male population of Volendam, who decided to go out to sea for as long as it took to find the lost girl, in the process building up a very successful fishing industry.
